Overview
Your customers can add a card with Apple Pay or Google Pay instead of typing their card details. The wallet buttons appear in your checkout and in your client portal, above the card form, for customers whose device and browser support them.
Digital wallets are available to tenants that process credit cards with Stripe. They are off by default, including for existing Stripe integrations. This article explains how wallet payments behave in gaiia, where your customers see the buttons, how to turn them on, and what to check when the buttons do not appear.
How digital wallets work in gaiia
A card added with Apple Pay or Google Pay is saved as a regular credit card on the customer's account. The wallet is only how the customer presented the card. As a result:
- The card carries the same fees, autopay, payment retries, dunning and expiry rules as a card entered by hand.
- Future invoices are charged to the saved card by autopay. The customer does not need to open their wallet again for each payment.
- No additional Stripe webhook events are needed. The events listed in Configure Stripe integration already cover wallet cards.
- Turning digital wallets off only stops customers from adding new cards through a wallet. Cards already saved through a wallet keep working.
Only Apple Pay and Google Pay are offered. Other Stripe one-click options, such as Link, PayPal and Amazon Pay, never appear next to the wallet buttons.
Where your customers see the wallet buttons
| Where | What the customer sees |
|---|---|
| Checkout | On the payment step, in the window used to add a credit card. The Apple Pay or Google Pay button appears above the card fields, followed by "or enter card details". |
| Client portal | When the customer adds a credit card as a payment method. The wallet button appears above the card fields in the same way. |
After the customer approves the card in their wallet, they still choose whether to use it for autopay and click Add card to save it. The wallet sheet shows the customer's recurring amount as their monthly bill.
Each customer sees only the wallet their device and browser support, as determined by Stripe. When no wallet is available, the buttons are hidden and the card form looks exactly as it does without digital wallets.
Requirements
The wallet buttons only appear when all of the following are true. gaiia controls some of these and your Stripe account controls the others.
| Requirement | Where it is set |
|---|---|
| Stripe is installed for Credit card payments. | gaiia |
| Digital wallets enabled is checked on the Stripe configuration. | gaiia |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay are turned on in the Default payment method configuration. | Stripe |
| Every checkout and client portal address is registered as a payment method domain. | Stripe |
| For the checkout only: your client portal is turned on and has a valid address. Apple Pay requires a page where customers can manage their recurring payment, and gaiia uses the client portal's payment methods page for this. | gaiia |
| The customer's device and browser support Apple Pay or Google Pay, and a card is set up in the wallet. | Customer |
Turning on digital wallets
Complete the steps in your Stripe account first, then turn on the setting in gaiia. The Stripe steps are also covered in Configure Stripe integration.
Digital wallets must be activated for your organization before the Digital wallets enabled setting appears in your Stripe integration. Contact gaiia support to have digital wallets activated before you start these steps.
A. Turn on Apple Pay and Google Pay in Stripe
- Open your Stripe payment method settings.
-
Select the Default payment method configuration.
gaiia always uses the Default configuration. Changes made to any other configuration have no effect on your checkout or client portal.
- Turn on Apple Pay and Google Pay.
B. Register your domains in Stripe
- Open your Stripe payment method domains.
- Add the full address of your checkout, for example
www.order.myisp.com. - Add the full address of your client portal.
-
Add the variant with and without
www.for each address your customers can use.Stripe registers each exact address separately. A single registration covers both Apple Pay and Google Pay. See how domain registration works in Stripe's documentation.
- If you test in your gaiia sandbox, also register the sandbox checkout and client portal addresses in the Stripe account your sandbox uses.
C. Turn on digital wallets in gaiia
- Go to Settings > Integrations.
- On the Installed apps tab, click the edit icon next to Stripe.
- Check Digital wallets enabled on the Stripe configuration.
- If you have more than one Stripe configuration, for example one per currency, repeat the previous step on each configuration where you want to offer wallets.
- Save your changes.
Troubleshooting
The wallet buttons do not appear
Check each requirement in order:
- Digital wallets enabled is checked on the Stripe configuration that serves the customer's currency.
- Apple Pay and Google Pay are on in the Default payment method configuration in Stripe, not in another configuration.
- The exact address in the customer's browser, including or excluding
www., is registered as a payment method domain in Stripe. - In the checkout, your client portal is turned on and has a valid address.
- The customer is on a supported device and browser and has a card set up in their wallet. For example, Apple Pay does not appear in Chrome on Windows.
The Digital wallets enabled field is missing
If the Stripe configuration does not show Digital wallets enabled, digital wallets have not been activated for your organization yet. Contact gaiia support to have them activated.
A wallet card was declined
A wallet card follows the same rules as any other credit card. Review the failed payment in the customer's billing history as you would for a card entered by hand.
