Overview
In this article, we'll be covering how to configure Coverage Areas for the Workforce module. We'll go over creating a coverage area, assigning one to a technician, and deleting one you no longer need.
For more context on Coverage Areas, reference this article: About Coverage Areas.
Creating a coverage area
Coverage Areas for Workforce are located within the Settings section of the Workforce module. The Workforce settings display Work Types, Shift Templates, and Coverage Areas.
The Coverage Areas section lists every coverage area associated with the Workforce module. To create a new one, click the Add Coverage Area button in the top right corner.
Clicking the button takes you to a new screen, where you'll start the coverage area creation process. The first step is naming the coverage area. The typical conventions for this line up with what the coverage area is covering, or the product it's related to (e.g., Florida or Home Security). Click Next once you've input the name.
Uploading a coverage area
The next step is choosing how you would like to upload your coverage area. There are two options here:
- Import File: Import a coverage area with a GeoJSON file.
- Map: Manually draw a geofence on a map to determine the coverage area.
Depending on the option you choose, you'll be taken to a new section—one to upload your file, and one to select the areas manually.
Once the areas have been uploaded or selected, the last step is Review and Confirm. If you're satisfied with the content, click Create.
Using a coverage area
Coverage areas are assigned to a technician when the technician is created. A coverage area doesn't stop a technician from being assigned to a Work Order outside of it, but it helps with scheduling them properly (e.g., not assigning a technician whose coverage area is Florida to a work order in Texas).
Coverage areas can only be assigned to a technician by users with the Workforce > Technicians > Edit permission enabled. For more on permissions, reference this article: Roles and Permissions.
To assign a coverage area to a technician, follow these steps:
- Go to the technician's profile.
- Click
Editto edit the profile. - Add a coverage area.
- Save the changes.
Deleting a coverage area
Coverage areas are deleted from the Coverage Areas section of the Workforce settings.
Deleting a coverage area is permanent and cannot be undone. There is no archived list to restore a coverage area from, and recreating one with the same name and geofence does not restore its previous associations. Review the impacts below before deleting.
Coverage areas can only be deleted by users with the Workforce > Settings > Edit permission enabled.
To delete a coverage area, follow these steps:
- Go to the Coverage Areas section of the Workforce settings.
- Click the Ellipsis menu at the end of the row of the coverage area you want to remove.
- Click
Delete. -
Check the acknowledgement box.
The
Deletebutton stays disabled until the acknowledgement box is checked. - Click
Deleteto confirm.
A confirmation message appears and the coverage area is removed from the list.
Impacts of deleting a coverage area
Deleting a coverage area affects technicians, work orders, and reporting:
- The coverage area is removed from the profile of every technician it was assigned to, and it can no longer be assigned to a technician.
- The coverage area is no longer applied to new Work Orders created within its geofence.
- The coverage area is no longer available as a filter on the Workforce Overview, Schedules, Technicians, and Work Orders views.
- Reporting can no longer be pulled based on the coverage area, since its work order associations are deactivated.
A coverage area can be deleted even if technicians or work orders are associated with it. Confirm that the coverage area is no longer needed for scheduling or reporting before deleting it.
